The Knoxville Bonsai Society was originally founded in 2002 by a handful of enthusiasts in the East Tennessee area. Aiming to promote the art of Bonsai throughout Tennessee and the Southeastern United States, the KBS holds monthly meetings where members can share and exchange information and expand their knowledge of bonsai in a friendly environment. Topics covered at the meetings include all aspects of bonsai culture and design - from basic techniques to seasonal care to wiring and display. In order to provide its membership with more hands-on learning opportunities, the Knoxville Bonsai Society also invites guest artists to conduct lectures and workshops several times each year. Past speakers have included Bill Valavanis, Warren Hill, and Arthur Joura. In addition, members are encouraged to bring trees from their personal collections to the monthly meetings for advice and critiquing. To showcase the hard work of its members, the KBS hosts the Knoxville Bonsai Show on the University of Tennessee Ag Campus each May. The best bonsai from across Tennessee are displayed at this event for public enjoyment.
